Botox® and fillers like Juvederm®By Michelle Schlentz, Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner who specializes in both Aesthetic and Functional Medicine at Medical Spa & Wellness by Michelle NP, in Holladay, UT 84117

In the ever-evolving world of skincare, injectables such as Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®or Dysport® and dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane® and RHA® brands of fillers have become some of the most popular, non-invasive treatments for achieving a youthful appearance. Over the past decade, these procedures have advanced significantly, offering more than just cosmetic benefits; they have also become integral to holistic skincare and wellness. As a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Practicing in Both Aesthetic and Functional Medicine, I, believe in a balanced approach that combines modern skincare solutions like injectables with holistic medical care to help individuals look and feel their best.

This comprehensive guide will explore how Botulinum Toxin and other injectables have revolutionized skincare, the science behind these treatments, their benefits, and how a holistic approach can enhance both your inner and outer beauty.

The Rise of Botox® Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin® in Modern Skincare

Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin®, and other injectables have revolutionized the skincare industry, transforming how people approach anti-aging and aesthetic enhancement. Originally seen as purely cosmetic treatments for reducing wrinkles, injectables have expanded their scope to address various skin and health concerns, including facial volume loss, contouring, and even certain medical conditions. I tend to look at you as a whole person, and ideally, we address your Aesthetic concerns, but also your medical deficiencies, hormonal loss, hair loss, through specialty testing to achieve optimal Aesthetics while optimizing your health as well.

Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin® A Brief Overview

Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin® are all brand names for botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Many people do refer to most of them as Botox®, but each neurotoxin is unique and slightly different. The original brand was approved first, but newer products have entered the market, and they continue to improve them. When used in small, controlled doses, botulinum toxin blocks nerve signals to muscles, temporarily preventing them from contracting. This helps relax facial muscles, leading to the reduction of dynamic wrinkles and fine lines, particularly in areas like the forehead, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows. Botulinum toxin can be used to slim the nose, lift the jowls, tighten the neck, open the eyes, lift the eyebrows, slim the face, and more. It can also be used medically to treat migraines, depression, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Botox® was first approved by the FDA in 1989 for medical use and later gained approval for cosmetic use in 2002. Since then, it has become one of the most sought-after non-surgical treatments worldwide.

Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane® and RHA® Dermal Fillers are used for Enhancing and Restoring Volume

Unlike Botox®, which works by temporarily paralyzing muscles, dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane®and RHA® add volume to the skin. These injectables are primarily composed of hyaluronic acid (a substance naturally found in the body) or other biocompatible materials like calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid. Fillers can address various concerns, such as:

  • Restoring lost facial volume (especially in the cheeks)
  • Enhancing facial contours (including lip augmentation)
  • Softening nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth)
  • Smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles

Fillers, provide immediate results that can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the product used and the area treated. Each brand of filler makes many different fillers.

The Science Behind Botox® and Fillers

Understanding the science behind these injectables helps explain why they have become staples in the new age of skincare.

How Botox® Works

Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin® are all neuromodulators, which means it interferes with the signals sent from nerves to muscles. When injected into a specific muscle, it prevents the muscle from contracting by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This temporary muscle paralysis causes the skin above the treated muscle to relax, smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuvveau® and Xeomin® are all most effective in treating dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repetitive facial movements (such as squinting or frowning). These include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet(lines around the eyes)
  • Frown lines(also known as “11s” or glabellar lines between the eyebrows)

Since Botox® works by blocking nerve signals, the effects typically last between three and six months, after which the muscle activity returns and wrinkles may reappear. However, with consistent treatments, the muscle can weaken over time, leading to longer-lasting results.

Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane®and RHA® How Dermal Fillers work:

Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane® and RHA® are all brand names of Dermal Fillers and they work by adding volume beneath the skin. The most common filler, hyaluronic acid, attracts water molecules, which helps hydrate and plump the skin. This is especially useful in areas where volume has been lost due to aging, such as the cheeks and lips.

Unlike , which is typically used for dynamic wrinkles, fillers are used to address static wrinkles and volume loss, both of which are caused by gravity, sun exposure, and the natural aging process. Fillers can also be used to enhance facial features, such as creating more defined cheekbones or fuller lips.

Dermal fillers  are designed to mimic the natural hyaluronic acid found in the body, making them biocompatible and safe. Over time, the body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid, which is why the effects are temporary.

Benefits of Botox® and Fillers in Skincare

Injectables offer a range of benefits, both cosmetic and medical, that make them appealing to individuals looking for minimally invasive ways to enhance their appearance.
1. Non-Surgical Anti-Aging Solution
Botox® and dermal fillers like Juvéderm® provide effective solutions for reducing the signs of aging without the need for surgery. For patients who are not ready for facelifts or other invasive procedures, injectables offer a way to achieve youthful, natural-looking results with minimal downtime.

2. Quick and Convenient Treatments
One of the main advantages of injectables is their convenience. Most Botulinum Toxin and filler treatments can be completed in less than 30 minutes, making them ideal for busy individuals who want quick results without extended recovery periods. This has earned Botulinum Toxin the nickname “lunchtime procedure.”

3. Natural-Looking Results
When performed by an experienced professional like Michelle, injectables can provide subtle, natural-looking enhancements that rejuvenate the face without making it appear overdone or “frozen.” The goal is to maintain facial expression and movement while minimizing wrinkles and restoring volume.

4. Versatility
Injectables are highly versatile and can be used to address a wide variety of concerns, from softening crow’s feet to enhancing lip volume. They can be customized to suit everyone’s unique needs, making them a popular choice for people of all ages.

5. Long-Lasting Results with Maintenance
While injectables are not permanent, the results are long-lasting compared to other non-invasive treatments like facials or chemical peels. Botulinum Toxin treatments typically lasts 3–6 months, and dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Regular maintenance treatments can help patients retain their desired look over time.

6. Safe and Minimally Invasive
When administered by a qualified and experienced provider, Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers are considered safe and carry minimal risks. They offer an excellent alternative to invasive surgeries, allowing patients to enhance their appearance with minimal discomfort and downtime.

A Holistic Approach to Skincare

At Medical Spa & Wellness By Michelle NP, in Holladay, Utah, I believe in a holistic approach to skincare, which means combining modern, evidence-based treatments like injectables with lifestyle, nutrition, and other non-invasive therapies to promote overall health and well-being.

Enhancing Natural Beauty

As a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, who specializes in both Aesthetic and Functional (Holistic) Medicine, my goal is to help my patients enhance their natural beauty in a way that complements their lifestyle and personal goals. I tailor each treatment plan to the individual, ensuring that their skincare journey aligns with their overall health and wellness.

The Role of Skincare and Nutrition

Botox and fillers can certainly help reduce the visible signs of aging, but maintaining healthy skin from the inside out is equally important. Nutrition plays a vital role in skin health, and a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can enhance the results of injectables.

Additionally, I work with my patients to develop customized skincare routines that include medical-grade products and treatments designed to maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and overall health.

Combining Botulinum Toxin and Fillers: The Perfect Duo for Facial Rejuvenation

While Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers each have their own unique benefits, combining the two treatments often yields the best results for full facial rejuvenation.

How Botox®, and Fillers like Juvéderm® Work Together

  • Botox® works best for dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions, such as frown lines and crow’s feet.
  • Fillers work best for static wrinkles and areas that have lost volume, such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and lips.

By strategically combining Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers, I can address both types of wrinkles and create a more comprehensive, natural-looking result. This combination therapy is often referred to as a “liquid facelift” because it provides the same anti-aging benefits as a traditional facelift without the need for surgery.

What to Expect from Your Botox® or Filler Appointment

At Medical Spa & Wellness by Michelle NP, I prioritize patient comfort and safety during every procedure. Here’s what you can expect during your Botox® or filler treatment:

Consultation
Before any treatment, I conduct a thorough consultation to assess your facial anatomy, discuss your aesthetic goals, and review your medical history. This ensures that the treatment plan is customized to your needs and that you understand the expected outcomes.

The Treatment Process
Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Xeomin® and fillers like Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Restylane® and RHA® treatments are relatively quick and minimally invasive. I use an ACCUVEIN vein finder to minimize any risk of bruising. I also use a fine needle or cannula to inject the Botulinum Toxin or filler into the targeted areas. Depending on the areas being treated, the entire process takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour appointments.  I do give longer than standard appointments to have time to answer any questions you may have.

Post-Treatment Care
After your treatment, you may experience mild swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites. These side effects typically subside within a few hours to a few days. I provide detailed post-treatment care instructions to help minimize any discomfort and ensure optimal results. These instructions may include:

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Refraining from rubbing or massaging the treated areas
  • Staying upright for at least four hours post-injection
  • Avoiding direct sunlight or excessive heat for a few days

Most patients can return to their regular activities immediately following the treatment, making Botulinum Toxin and fillers a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.

Follow-Up and Maintenance
At Medical Spa & Wellness by Michelle NP, I encourage regular follow-up appointments to assess the results of the treatment and discuss any additional needs. For botulinum toxin, follow-up sessions are typically every 3-6 months, while fillers may require touch-ups every 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product and individual response. During these visits, we can make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan to maintain and enhance your results.
